The Émail Table

holds the memory

of a black rock fragment,

once slipped into a child’s pocket.

It unites wood and lava,

sap and fire,

in a patient equilibrium.

 

Its top of volcanic stone,

enameled at high temperature,

captures the light and goes over

the edges of its base.

The raw oak,

precious support,

is carved into three curved legs,

asymmetrical and textured.

 

Telluric, supple, mineral,

this table recalls the scent

of earth after a storm.

It accompanies the silence of a book,

opened, then left there

to carry its life.
