The Sculpture Side Table

rises like a fragment of landscape.

It draws from a childhood memory,

when two rough stones,

found in the forest,

were stacked into an improvised bedside table.

Hugo Besnier distills the essence:

an archaic, mineral base,

upon which a living form rests.

 

Grand Antique marble,

quarried in the Pyrenees

and carved by a stonemason,

supports a walnut top.

The wood, worked with a gouge,

undulates softly beneath the hand.

A diamond-shaped hollow

pierces the marble,

letting the light pass through.

 

Totemic, contained, mineral,

the Sculpture Side Table is conceived

for those who live with little,

but choose each object

as one would choose a work of art.

It carries within it the sound of chisels

ringing through stone,

the scent of warm wood

and the distant one

of a marble quarry.
